Well I’ve been busy working towards some book illustrations for, Scale by Will Self. It’s honestly tough going, as I’m not used to doing the story telling type thing and the tutor i see every week switches back and forth giving me really mixed messages due to a difference in taste.
Any way the books about an author who is a secret home made morphine addict, trying to write a “howdunit” murder novel taking place on the M40. This leaves him separated from his wife and children liven in a tiny bungalow, obsessed with scale, roads and the motor-ways that surround him. So for the illustrations I’ve decided to do some wood cuts. I thought the grain would provide some nice lines such as the ones you get on a ruler. I think it works quite well on the syringe but I’ll let you be the sole judge of that. I’m using CMYK as a way to play with the objects and create new elements and shapes. But I think this lacks the dreamy characteristics of the main characters drug of choice.
Well other than that I AM BUSY with interviewing illustrators for an essay. Getting some sort of work experience for the summer. which doesn’t sound like a lot but there’s research and phone calls and writing and research and writing. So just one big horrible loop of trouble and toil. But I shall try to remain chipper as it usually all pans out.
Wishing you all a mellow week James
